Lessons 7.5 and 7.8
-When x a given number by a fraction greater than 1 (an improper fraction/mixed number, numerator greater), the product will be greater than a given number.
-When x a given number by a fraction less than 1 (regular fraction, numerator smaller), the product will be smaller than the given number.
-A fraction equals 1 when the numerator and denominator are the same number. Identity property of x states that any number x 1 is that number.
Some examples:
2/3 x 3 and 1/6 will be less than 3 and 1/6 because 2/3 is a regular fraction less than 1.
2/2 x 3/2 will be equal to 3/2 because 2/2 is equal to 1.
5 x 1/3 will be greater than 1/3 because 5 is greater than 1.
4/5 x 7/5 Will the product be greater than, less than, or equal to 4/5. Underline the number the problem asks you to compare with the answer. So, underline 4/5. Box the other number. So, box 7/5. Use the boxed number and ask, "Is this number/fraction greater than, less than, or equal to 1." Since, 7/5 is an improper fraction greater than 1 this product will be greater than 4/5.





Numerator: top number in fraction; denominator: bottom number of fraction
Equivalent: same value as, equal

Prime number: only 1 and itself as factors; ex. 5: 1x5, 1 and 5 only factors
Composite number: more than 1 and itself as factors; ex. 9: 1x9 and 3x3, 1,3,9 factors

Inverse Operation: opposite operation (add/subtract, multiply/divide)
ex. - 9.6 x 4 = 38.4, 38.4 divided by 4 = 9.6 or 38.4 divided by 9.6 = 4
